These figures illustrate the complexity of the problem of MSDs in the hotel industry, a difficulty for employers that comes on top of those of recruiting and retaining employees in this sector.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2><strong>Focus on the profession:<\/strong> chambermaids and valets<\/h2>\n<p>Chambermaids and valets are responsible for the upkeep and cleanliness of a hotel&#8217;s bedrooms and communal areas. Much more than a simple cleaning job, their role is essential as it contributes directly to the image and comfort of the hotel. In this context, chambermaids and valets have to pick up their pace, putting more emphasis on certain tasks, while respecting the time allowed to complete the tasks, linked to demanding constraints.<\/p>\n<h3>Increased tasks difficulty<\/h3>\n<p>This constant pressure, combined with the physical demands and constraints of the job, can lead to a number of occupational hazards:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Awkward postures and movements are at the root of the risks:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prolonged standing, frequent walking and trampling;<\/li>\n<li>Crouching positions to clean certain areas ;<\/li>\n<li>Repetition of cleaning movements;<\/li>\n<li>Excessive strain on the back when handling loads (bags of laundry, mattresses, hoovers, etc.);<\/li>\n<li>Frequent moving of heavy equipment: cleaning trolleys, furniture, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>With aggravating factors, often linked to work organisation:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High work rates and tight deadlines, sometimes with limited breaks;<\/li>\n<li>Lack of task rotation and teamwork;<\/li>\n<li>Atypical working hours;<\/li>\n<li>Equipment that is sometimes unsuitable;<\/li>\n<li>Poorly designed, unsuitable working environments (stairs, narrow spaces making work more difficult);<\/li>\n<li>Stress and tension due to unforeseen circumstances, interruptions and demands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What are the health risks?<\/h3>\n<p>These sometimes unsuitable working conditions lead to illnesses and accidents, such as back and joint pain, falls from a height or on a level, and chemical and psychosocial risks. When a chambermaid or valet does her or his job, she or he puts daily strain on the back, shoulders, elbows and wrists.
